Joel is known amongst the other members of Desert Square to be very mischievous and cunning. She very often can be found stirring up trouble with other soldiers and sees it as her own source of entertainment. She is very intelligent, often using this to her own advantage. Some may describe Joel as being morbid or sadistic. She typically sees people she does not know as enemies unless they've somehow gained her trust and treats them with threatening behaviour until warded off. Joel also presents eccentric behaviour while she can act playful around some people she is only really close with a few people.
Despite this, Joel seems to care heavily for those few close to her, even if it may be in her own different way of showing her affection towards these people. When in a good mood she can be a bit more open with people she isn't close with, but typically spends her time with the ones she does trust.

Background
In 2062, Joel had been brought into Desert Square hysterical and afraid. It was reported she had escaped another faction where due to her behaviour, she'd been given brutal punishment and mistreatment. She was discovered on the edge of Desert Square's territory and when questioned refused to comply and was eventually brought in for questioning. It was decided that Joel could stay in the faction for some time to settle her in before she would have to do some form of work or training. She agreed and while it took time and patience for her to adjust after escaping, she made a good fit
A little while after she was brought into Desert Square, she noticed Phil, who had also escaped another brutal faction. Phil struck Joel as a different kind of soldier, she expected him to be as rowdy and obnoxious as the other men but due to his stern and steely character he tended not to stick around them. Joel liked that about Phil and while her mischevious personality often clashed with Phil's more serious temperament, it wasn't long before the two were best friends. Despite Joel's tendencies, she understood where Phil was coming from.
